Urban Spaces and Experience Design

Urban Spaces and Experience Design (USED) is an arts and research project focusing on participatory media and experience design in the urban and wireless context. The aims of the project are to create a research and production practice informed by an understanding of the experiential and social qualities of public spaces as they are reconfigured by mobile and pervasive technologies, and to develop methods for participatory media and experience design.

USED was inititated by m-cult in 2004 and is co-organized with HIIT Helsinki Institute for Information technology. The project is funded by the Finnish Academy and the Arts Council of Finland / Arts and research interaction programme in 2005-07. USED collaborates with international networks of location-based, pervasive and mobile arts, and hosts interdisciplinary seminars for researchers and practitioners who work in the field.
